Family and Consumer Sciences Education

 

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education Program consists of the following components:

 

Early Childhood Education
Program Content: Students must complete a core curriculum which includes:
  • Child growth and development
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy environment
  • Nutrition
  • Implementation of age appropriate activities
  • Child abuse
  • Curriculum for children
  • Infant/toddler care
  • Guiding behavior
  • Health and safety regulations
  • Nutrition and food service
  • employability and leadership skills
  • Balancing family, school and work

If you like children, you will want to know how preschoolers grow and learn. Children need unique individuals to provide a healthy environment with activities in language, math, science, music and art. Jobs are waiting for certified caregivers who know about guiding behavior, teaching communication skills and following rules and regulations governing child care.
 

Entrance Requirements:
    • 16 years or older and not currently enrolled in another Miami-Dade County Public School, occupational interest, high school diploma /GED
Length of Program:
  • The entire program is 600 hours (Approximately 6 months) but students can earn a certificate at the completion of the following OCPs:
    • OCP A: Child Care Worker, 40 hours
    • OCP B: Child Care teacher Aide, 110 hours
    • OCP C: PreSchool Teacher
    • OCP D: Child Care Development Specialist

Class Schedule:

8:00 am - 2:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Minimum basic skills grade level required for awarding a Full Program Completion Certificate are 9th grade in Math, Reading, and Language on the TABE Test.

To receive the Florida State CDA (Child Development Associate Equivalency, students must also complete the following requirements:

        Program Certification

DCF 20 hour Child Care Work certification

DCF 10 hour Pre-School Certification

DCF 10 hour Behavioral Observation and Screening Certification

DCF 5 hour Literacy Program

First Aide Certification Child Care Personnel

Adult and Pediatric CPR

40 Hour Preschool Appropriate Practices Program
Program Description: The DC &F Childcare 40 hour Pre-School Appropriate Practices Vocational Certificate Program (30-10 and 5 hours) is required for entry level in the child care field.
Entrance Requirements:
    • Students registering for the 40 hour program are required to take three courses:
      • 1ST: 30 HOUR Child Care Facility Personnel Training
        • The 5 Modules of study are:
          • Rules and Regulations
          • Health, Safety and Nutrition
          • Identifying Abuse, Reporting Abuse
          • Child Growth and Development
          • Behavior Observation and Screening
      • 2nd: 10 hour PreSchool Appropriate Practices
      • 3rd: 5 hour Literacy Program
Length of Program:
    • 40 hours (Approximately 2 months, once a week), OCPA (Child Care Worker)
    • Students will be required to take (not required to pass) the TABE test within 6 weeks of the start of the class
    • Students will complete each of the 30 and 10 hour courses and then take a state mandated test. Students are given instructions in the class for registering into the “State Child Care training System” testing procedures and fees. Department of Children & Families certificate are honored throughout the state of Florida

5:15 pm - 9:30 pm, Every Thursday
