Health Science Education

 

The Health Science Education Program consists of the following components:

 

Dental Assisting
Program Content: The course content includes, but is not limited to:
  • Dental office and patient management
  • Basic dental laboratory procedures
  • Dental and general anatomy
  • Dental terminology
  • Nutrition
  • Dental instruments and equipment
  • Microbiology
  • Dental pharmacology and anesthesia
  • Chairside assisting and expanded functions
  • dental office emergencies/CPR
  • maintenance and asepsis of dental operator and instrumentation
  • Dental specialist procedures
  • Employability skills
  • Leadership and human relations skills
  • Ethics and jurisprudence
  • Dental materials and preventive dentistry

This program incorporates practical experience in dental clinics and offices.

Entrance Requirements:
    • Occupational interest, complete physical exam, vaccination update and transportation to clinics and offices.
Length of Program:
    • Length of Program: 1080 hours (Approximately 1 year)
      • OCP A: Basic Healthcare Worker Core, 90 hours
      • OCP B: Dental Assistant, 990 hours

Practical Nursing
Program Content: Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in:
  • Health Science Education CORE
  • Medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric and geriatric nursing
  • Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in nurse assistant, medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric and geriatric nursing
  • Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in both acute and long term care situations
  • Personal, family, and community health concepts
  • Nutrition, human growth, and development throughout life
  • Body structure and function, interpersonal relationship skills
  • Mental health concepts including pet facilitated therapy
  • Legal aspects of practice
  • Current issues in nursing practice

Clinical experience makes up at least 50% of the total program. The program is approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing so the graduate is eligible to take the examination to practice as a  license practical nurse. In the State of Florida students may articulate into the RN transition program.

Students must provide their own transportation for clinical practice.

Entrance Requirements:
    • Occupational interest, Pass the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills), recent physical examination, High School Diploma or GED, background Check
Length of Program:
    • 1350 hours (Approximately 1 year and 2 months)
      • OCP A: Basic Healthcare Worker,90 hours
      • OCP B: Articulated Nursing Assistant, 75 hours
      • OCP C: Practical Nursing, 1185 hours

Class Schedule:

8:00 am - 2:00 pm, Monday - Friday

3:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Medical Assisting
Program Content: This program is designed to prepare the student for employment as a Medical Assistant or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in an occupation where skills taught in the Medical Assistant Program are required for employment.

The commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredits the program and is located at 1361 Park Street, Clearwater, Florida 33756, telephone 1-727-210-2350. upon completion of the program, the student is eligible to take the national certification exam for CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants.

Classroom and laboratory activities follow a competence-based format where students establish their own learning pace based on their individual learning style. This allows for flexibility based on life-long experience and basic skills level achievement.

Program content areas include:

  • CORE Curriculum

Administrative

  • Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments
  • Schedule inpatient/outpatient admission and procedures
  • Perform procedural and diagnostic coding
  • Manage accounts receivable and payable
  • Document and maintain accounting and banking records

Clinical

  • Prepare and assist with examinations, procedures and treatments
  • Medical laboratory: urinalysis, CBC, and phlebotomy
  • Pharmacology-theory and administrating of medications and immunizations
  • Assist with minor office surgery
  • Electrocardiograph
  • Basic X-ray machine operation

General (Transdisciplinary)

  • Professionalism
  • Medical and ethical principles
  • Prioritizing tasks and time management
  • Communication Skills
  • use medical terminology appropriately
  • Awareness and compliance of federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines
  • Method of health promotion and disease prevention

When students have completed instruction and clinical practice in the classroom, they are placed in a medical office or appropriate clinical working environment for externship experience.

Students must provide their own transportation from externship assignments.

 

Entrance Requirements:
    • Occupational interests, complete physical exam and transportation to clinics and offices
       
Length of Program:
    • The entire program is 1300 hours (Approximately 1 year and 2 months to complete) and is only offered to post-secondary students who are 18 years or older. Students may earn a certificate at the completion of the following OCPs:
      • OCP A: Basic Healthcare Worker,90 hours
      • OCP B: Medical Office Receptionist, 100 hours
      • OCP C: Phlebotomist, 75 hours
      • OCP D: EKG Aide, 75 hours
      • OCP E: Medical Assisting, 960 hours

Minimum basic skills grade levels required for awarding a Full Program Completion Certificate are 10th grade in Math, Reading, and Language on the TABE Test.

Patient Care Technician
Program Content: This program is designed to prepare students for employment as advanced, cross trained assistance (called Patient Care Technicians, PCT's, by the industry, Health Care Technicians, Patient Care Assistants, Nursing Aides and Orderlies, Home Health Aides, Phlebotomist, Electrocardiograph Aides, or Allied Health Assistants and to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in any of these occupations. This program offers a board foundation of knowledge and skills, expanding the traditional role of the Nursing Assistant, for both acute and long term care settings.
 
Entrance Requirements:
    • 16 years or older who are not currently enrolled in another Miami-Dade County Public School, students entering clinical experience MUST complete a physical examination before beginning clinical experience, students entering clinical areas are required to be in the approved uniform with appropriate accessories (watch, stethoscope, scissors).
Length of Program:
    • 600 hours (Approximately 6 months), but it is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of seven occupational completion points. The Health Science Core is required for all health programs and options. Students who have previously completed the Health Science Core will not have to repeat the core. A student who completes the applicable competencies at any occupational completion point may either continue with the training program or exit as an occupational completer.
      • OCP A: Basic Healthcare Worker (CORE) ,90 hours
      • OCP B: Articulated Nursing Assistant, 75 hours
      • OCP C: Advanced Home Health Aide, 50 hours
      • OCP D: Patient Care Assistant, 75 hours
      • OCP E: Allied Health Assistant,  Electrocardiograph Aide & Monitor Tech, 150 hours
      • OCP F: Advanced Allied Health Assistant – Phlebotomist Aide, 100 hours
      • OCP G: Patient Care Technician, 60 hours

Minimum basic skills grade levels required for awarding a Full Program Completion Certificate are 10th grade in Math, Reading and Language on the TABE Test.
