ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS

 

Program’s Mission Statement

Companies perform vital functions by offering and increasingly wide array of business and accounting services to clients. These services include public management, and government accounting, as well as internal auditing.

Program Content

This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills expanding the traditional role of the Bookkeeper and Accounting Assistant.  The content includes manual and computerized accounting methods using double-entry accounting principles.  It also includes methods of recording business transactions; reparation and analysis of various documents and financial statements; payroll records and tax forms; accounting control systems; account and transaction analysis; inventory methods; the aging process; depreciation, and the application of accounting principles to various entities.

The students learn the fundamentals of computer technology and learn how to use spreadsheet software (Excel) and computerized accounting programs (QuickBooks, Pro Peachtree).

The course/program also provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these occupations.

 

Entrance Requirements

¹    16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in other Miami-Dade County Public School

Length of Program

The entire program is 900 hours, but  students can earn a certificate at the completion of OCP’s:

OCP A (Information Technology Assistant)

            150 hours

            Business Systems and Technology

OCP B (Accounting Clerk) 300 hours

             Accounting Applications 1

             Accounting Applications 2

OCP C (Bookkeeper) 300 hours

             Accounting Applications 3

             Accounting Applications 4

OCP D (Accounting Assistant) 150 hours

             Accounting Applications 5

 

Minimum basic-skills grade levels required for awarding a Full Program Completion Certificate are 9th grade in Math, Reading, and Language on the TABE Test.

Employment Opportunities:

To prepare students for employment as an Accounting Clerk, Payroll Clerk, Accounts Receivable Clerk, Accounts Payable Clerk, Accountant or Bookkeeper, and to provide supplemental training for persons previously and currently employed in any of these occupations.

Salary

In 2004, the median hourly wage for bookkeeping is $13.25, accounting is $23.33

Employment of accountants is expected to grow about as fast as the average of all occupations through the year 2010. In addition to job openings resulting from growth, the need to replace accountants and bookkeepers who retire or transfer to other occupations will produce numerous jobs annually.
