BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
Program’s Mission Statement
Mr. Eric Goding is a well-know and well-qualified instructor who facilitates this program. The construction program focuses on understanding all aspects of the building construction and repair industry, residential plumbing, blueprint reading, heating ventilation and air conditioning systems, residential electricity, roofing, cabinetry, framing, interior finishing, tiling, painting, interpreting contracts and document specifications, and identifying local, state and federal code regulations.
Program Content
Electrical Wiring: Prepare students for employment or advanced training in a variety of construction electrical industries. This program focuses on broad, transferable skills, stresses the understanding of all aspects of the Electricity Industry.
Carpentry: Prepare students for employment in the carpentry and cabinetmaking industry with a stress on basic carpentry/cabinet making skills.
This cluster of programs focuses on broad, transferable skills, stresses the understanding of the carpentry and cabinetmaking industry, and demonstrates elements of the industry such as planning, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues, and health, safety and environmental issues.
Masonry: Prepare students for employment as hard tile setters. The content includes, but is not limited to, communication skills, leadership skills, human relations and employability skills, safe and efficient work practices, proper care and use of hand tools and equipment, tile setting materials, basic blueprint reading, trade math and estimating materials for tile setting.
Shop or laboratory activities are an integral part of this program and provide instruction in adhesives, bedding materials, clay wall applications, masonry bed application, layout, setting, cutting, and grouting of ceramic tile.
Plumbing: This cluster of programs focuses on broad, transferable skills, stresses understanding of all aspects of the pipe industry, and demonstrates elements of the Pipe Trades industry; such as planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues.
Laboratory Activities: Classroom, shop, and laboratory activities are an integral part of this program. These activities include instruction in the use of the safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and processes found in the industry. Equipment and supplies should be provided to enhance hands-on experiences for students in the chosen occupation. In addition, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, student received on the field training (at construction site).
Entrance Requirements
¹ 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in another Miami-Dade County Public School. ¹ Occupational Interest
Length of Program
The entire program is 1050 hours, but students can earn a certificate at the completion of the following OCP’s:
OCP A (Building Construction Helper) 450hours OCP B (Building Construction Technician) 600 hours
Minimum basic-skills grade levels required for awarding a Full Program Completion Certificate are 9th grade in Math, Reading, and Language on the TABE Test
Employment Opportunities
Career opportunities in this field are wide ranging. Program completers may work for developers, public utilities agencies, privately owned repair and replacement companies
Salary
Median entry-level salaries range from $10.00 to $14.00 per hour. Experienced tradesmen and contractors can easily earn $50,000 to $70,000 a year. |
