ADULT GENERAL EDUCATION Adult general education courses are designed to improve educational opportunities for adults who lack the level of literacy skills needed for effective citizenship and productive employment. Instruction is always based on the needs of the individual student. Students may perform at different levels and progress at different rates, depending upon ability, achievement and learning goals.
Entrance Requirementsq Basic skills testing for appropriate placement q 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in another Miami-Dade County Public School
Length of Program¨ GED – Students will exit the program when he/she has obtained the GED diploma.
Computer Lab:Students enrolled in the ABE, ESOL or GED program have access to computer assisted instruction. The lab helps the student reinforce the necessary skills.
GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (GED) General Education Development (GED) is sometimes referred to as the High School Equivalency Test. Students may elect to prepare for the five GED tests in a structured environment. The material covered in the classroom is based on the subjects covered in high schools around the country and includes test-taking skills. Students are provided instruction designed to help prepare them to pass the GED test. To be enrolled in the GED classes students should achieve 9.0 or higher on the TABE test.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GED TEST
Candidates registering for the GED test must: 1. Pay an application fee of $50.00 in cash. 2. Have a Florida driver’s license or Florida ID, from Driver’s License Bureau.

Have legal proof of a Social Security number in one of the
following formats: 4. Client must be 18 years old and a resident of Florida. If the client is not 18 years old, the client must request an age waiver letter.
a. If the client is still enrolled in a high school, the client must request the age waiver letter through the home high school principal’s office. b. If the client is not enrolled in a high school, the client must request the age waiver letter through the principal’s office at an adult center. 5. Clients who have changed their last name due to marriage or divorce and whose last name does not match both IDs will require a copy of the marriage license or divorce certificate to verify name change. 6. On the day of the test: Client must present the following to the GED examiner: a. Legal photo ID b. Proof of Social Security (same ID brought in on the day of registration) 7. Registration should take place at least one week before the actual test is taken. The test takes two days (four hours each day) and is given twice a week. |
