PRACTICAL NURSING

 

Program’s Mission Statement

 

The practical nursing faculty is committed to providing a high standard of quality nursing education to all of our students. Through cooperative team efforts, our graduate practical nurses will be: successful in their licensure requirements; prepared for an entry level nursing position; adopt measures that ensure the safe practice of nursing; show sensitivity to cultural diversity; and promote health habits that contribute to total wellness.

 

Program content

 

Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in:

¹    Health Science Education CORE

¹    Medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric and geriatric nursing

¹    Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in nurse assistant, medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric and geriatric nursing

¹    Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in both acute and long term care situations

¹    Personal, family, and community health concepts

¹    Nutrition, human growth, and development throughout life

¹    Body structure and function, interpersonal relationship skills

¹    Mental health concepts including pet facilitated therapy

¹    Pharmacology and administration of medications

¹    Legal aspects of practice

¹    Current issues in nursing practice

 

Clinical experience makes up at least 50% of the total program.  The program is approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing so the graduate is eligible to take the examination to practice as a licensed practical nurse.  In the State of Florida students may articulate into the RN transition program.  The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing.

 

Students must provide their own transportation for clinical practice.

 

 

Entrance Requirements

 

¹    Occupational Interest

¹    Pass the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills)

¹    Recent complete physical examination

¹    High School diploma or GED

¹    Background check

 

 

 

 

Length of Program

 

The entire program is 1350 hours, but students may earn a certificate at the completion of the following OCP’s:

 

OCP A (Basic Healthcare Worker) 90 hours

OCP B (Articulated Nursing Assistant) 75 hours

OCP C (Practical Nursing) 1185 hours

 

Minimum basic-skills grade levels required for awarding a Full Program Completion Certificate  are 11th grade in Math, Reading, and Language on the TABE Test

 

Employment Opportunities

 

Licensed practical nurses can work in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, doctor’s offices or home health services.

 

Salary

 

In 2004, the median hourly salary range for Licensed Practical was $16.83 to $18.67.
